A Friend of the Family Release Date, Plot, Cast, and More

In the upcoming drama series A Friend of the Family, based on the true story of a young girl who was abducted twice by the same man, a family friend who used a web of manipulation, blackmail, and out-of-this-world lies to warp her mind and drive her family apart, a picture-perfect family with a picture-perfect life meets the neighbors of their nightmares.

It’s hard to believe that in 1972, a charismatic man used his charm to get away with steamy secrets, drugging, aliens, and underage marriage. But that’s exactly what happened at a time before the internet, cell phones, and Chris Hansen. After 50 years, Universal Content Productions is finally bringing us the mind-bending story that you have to see to believe.

Nick Antosca, the creator of the series and the director of the true-crime film The Act and the upcoming Netflix original Brand New Cherry Flavor, achieves the unusual sense that everything is both fine and very not okay by balancing gentle pastels, dreamy reminiscence, and stunning dark undertones. Audiences will be on the edge of their seats as they witness the many deceptions and manipulations that occur in this twisted and confusing tale. In preparation for the premiere of A Friend of the Family, we have dug deep and uncovered all you need to know about this amazing true-crime series.

The true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was held captive for years by a charismatic but disturbed “friend,” is the inspiration for the chilling film A Friend of the Family. The Brobergs, who were dedicated to their community, their house, and their values, were blindsided by their neighbor’s deft manipulation of their vulnerabilities to drive a wedge between them and influence their children in their favor. This is the story of how their lives were upended and how they persevered.

Based on the true story of the Broberg family, in which the daughter, Jan, was kidnapped multiple times over a lengthy period by a charming, psychotic “friend” of the parents, the upcoming limited series is based on the true story of the Broberg house. According to the official synopsis, the Brobergs were taken by surprise by the diabolical methods their neighbor and friend developed to take advantage of their weaknesses, push them apart, and brainwash their sweet daughter against them.

Their lives had been dedicated to their theology and revolved around their family and the neighborhood. This account is their account of how they made it through the difficult times after their lives were turned upside down. If you are unfamiliar with the story, we strongly advise seeing the Netflix documentary Abducted in Plain Sight first.
