Is it all Aunt Martha’s fault?
A flashback reveals that Angela expired alongside their father eight years earlier, not Peter. Aunt Martha took in Peter, but because she now had a son and had always sought a daughter, she raised Peter as a girl and rechristened him Angela. That, conferring to the movie, is why Angela seems so traumatized and why she eventually became perverse enough to kill a gathering of people.
Of course, that’s why the film is precisely problematic today. Angela isn’t transgender in any unadventurous sense (trans people choose to nonstop their real genders, while Angela was required into hers by her aunt).
Still, the movie falls into that old figure of speech of commingling gender-nonconforming people with mental illness and murder, similar to other films like “Dressed To Kill.” There is still roughly campy fun in “Sleepaway Camp.” Still, many modern listeners will find its sexual politics disturbing and unwatchable at worst. And if you’re one of those individuals who would rather not watch it, at slightest now you know where that banana ending came from.
You can watch it on Apple TV+.
