Black Widow Melina Vostokoff and super soldier Alexei Shostakov posed as a family in Ohio in 1995, with Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova serving as their daughters. They were working as Russian covert spies. Romanoff and Belova are sent to the Red Room for training after they steal S.H.I.E.L.D. intelligence and flee to Cuba, where their boss, General Dreykov, is waiting for them. As Romanoff and Belova rise to prominence as deadly assassins in the ensuing decades, Shostakov is imprisoned in Russia. Following his assistance in the bombing of Dreykov’s Budapest office by Clint Barton, which ostensibly results in the deaths of Dreykov and his young daughter Antonia, Romanoff eventually defected to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Romanoff is wanted for breaking the Sokovia Accords in 2016.  She runs away from U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and finds refuge in a safehouse Rick Mason provided in Norway. Belova kills a rebellious former Black Widow while the Red Room’s chemical mind-control agent is neutralized by a synthetic gas that comes into touch with him. Belova hides and sends antidote vials to Romanoff in the hopes that she and the Avengers can rescue the other Widows. Red Room agent Taskmaster strikes Romanoff while she is unintentionally driving while carrying the vials in her vehicle.

After escaping Taskmaster, Romanoff discovers that the vials originated in Budapest. She meets Belova there, who informs her that Dreykov is still alive and that the Red Room is still in use. They are attacked by Black Widows and Taskmaster, but Romanoff and Belova manage to escape and meet Mason, who gives them a helicopter.

To find Dreykov’s location, Romanoff and Belova get Shostakov out of jail, and he gives them the address of Vostokoff, who resides on a farm outside of Saint Petersburg. She is honing the chemical mind control technique that was applied to the Widows there. Romanoff persuades Vostokoff to assist them, and the two utilize face mask technology to switch places when Vostokoff alerts Dreykov and his operatives arrive to take them. Vostokoff releases Belova and Shostakov from their confinement at the Red Room, an airborne facility.

Romanoff’s cover is exposed by Dreykov, who then reveals that Taskmaster is Antonia. Antonia sustained such serious damage that Dreykov had to implant technology in her head to save her, which led to the creation of the ideal soldier, who could imitate the movements of anyone she saw. Romanoff overcomes the pheromone lock that has been implanted in every Widow, which prevents her from attacking Dreykov, by breaking her nose and cutting a nerve in her nasal tube. While Vostokoff destroys one of the facility’s engines, Shostakov engages Taskmaster in combat. Then Taskmaster is imprisoned in a cell.

Other Black Widows attack Romanoff as Dreykov flees, but Belova exposes them to the antidote. As the facility starts to blow up and crumble, Romanoff copies Dreykov’s computer’s positions of other Widows all across the world. She gets the two remaining antidote bottles and unlocks the jail door to let Taskmaster out. While Belova destroys Dreykov’s aircraft, allowing Vostokoff and Shostakov to flee, Dreykov is killed. Romanoff provides Belova with a parachute while in freefall before facing Taskmaster.

Once they have landed, Romanoff uses one antidote vial on Taskmaster and delivers the other to Belova along with information on where the other mind-controlled Widows are so she may locate them and set them free. Romanoff bids Belova, Vostokoff, and Shostakov farewell before they depart with Antonia and the released Widows. Two weeks later, Mason gives Romanoff a Quinjet to use in releasing the Avengers from their incarceration.

In a post-credits sequence that takes place after Romanoff’s demise, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine accuses Barton of killing her and names him as the next victim of Belova.

What Can We Expect From Black Widow Season 2?

If a Black Widow 2 were to be made, it might explore a previously unexplored aspect of the character’s biography, perhaps even the roughly four-year “blip” in which she served as the leader of the Avengers. This is especially true if Scarlett Johansson were to return. On the other hand, similar to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, it might include a new character assuming the role, but it seems likely that she would still be a significant invisible presence.
