Borgen Season 4 Release Date, Plot, Cast, and More

Borgen is a Danish political drama produced and written by Adam Price along with Jeppe Gjervig Gram and Tobias Lindholm. The same company that created The Killing (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) now produces Borgen.

The documentary explains how small centrist politician Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) overcame all odds to become Denmark’s first female prime minister.

There have been four seasons, each with eight to ten episodes. Borgen Season 4 is the most intriguing since Borgen – Power and Glory tackles some of the most important political topics of the day, including the importance of Denmark in the modern world, the struggle between the superpowers for control of the Arctic, and the environmental disaster.

The battle for power and its effects on people, both professionally and personally, are the main themes of the narrative. Here’s everything you need to know about Borgen season 4.

Borgen’s lead writer, Adam Price stated, “The game has definitely changed, and the new season tries to reflect on that.

“It’s become a faster and dirtier game – the politicians have to change their ways, and that has changed them as well. The characters have moved into a different chapter in their lives – Birgitte is now in her early 50s, and if you have been so long in politics as she has, you have been changed by that as a person.”

Having said that, here’s what to expect from Borgen season 4.

When a drilling firm unexpectedly uncovers oil in Greenland, Birgitte Nyborg has just been appointed as the country’s new foreign minister. In spite of Denmark’s “big brother” connection with Greenland, this incident ushers in a global war for control over the Arctic, and it forces the usually seasoned politician Nyborg to admit time and time again that Denmark is the underdog – and a rather unruly one – in this game.

Female leadership is not as innovative in the Borgen season four- not as it used to be anyway.  The majority of the Danish cabinet members are women, as are the Swedish prime minister, the Greenlandic premier, the Russian ambassador, and the new prime minister, who now uses the hashtag #thefutureisfemale in her online posts.

Foreign minister Nyborg has a superior who shares a striking likeness with Mette Frederiksen, the present head of state of Denmark, right down to her top knot and sweet Instagram postings. This prime minister is equally as keen as she is to establish her dominance. The main issue in the show is the rivalry between the two women.

This fourth season also focuses more on Birgitte Hjort Srensen’s character Katrine Fonsmark, who has left her position as Birgitte’s head of press and is now back in journalism as the director of the news department for a major national television network.

This is another significant subplot in the program- The battles among women in the newsroom. After taking over as the public network’s head of news, Katrine Fonsmark swiftly runs afoul of a newer, more outspoken employee.

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, who plays Katrine, says,

“She fails to realize the importance of making sure her employees feel heard and seen, and she has the added pressure of a rising sh-tstorm on social media, so the room for her to maneuver becomes very narrow.”
