If this self-induced apocalypse wasn’t enough, Earth was bombarded by giant creatures entitled Klaxosaurs. In such a world, Hiro, a parasite–artificially created human–and Zero Two, a half-Klaxosaur half-human, stumble across each other. They are met with many hurdles, and thousands of people revolt against them, yet they cling to their hope. Their aspirations to lead humanity to thrive again and their flourishing emotions towards each other fuel their flight.

Season one of Darling In The Franxx starts off with Hiro meeting Zero Two. Hiro, an aspiring Franxx pilot, has lost all hope after failing a test. While Zero Two is a human-Klaxosaur hybrid and an expert Franxx driver. At the startup ceremony, the Plantation is attacked by a Klaxosaur.
Zero Two shows up in her Franxx, Strelizia, and starts fighting the giant. Zero Two’s partner dies in the fight, and she is also poorly hurt. Hiro realizing that Zero Two cannot continue fighting alone, steps into the Franxx and wants to co-pilot it. Meanwhile, Zero Two kissed Hiro as now he was her darling. This awakens Strelizia to her full power, and the Klaxosaur is easily defeated.
However, a myth remains surrounding Zero Two that any partner who rides three times with her ends up dead. And the same might happen to Hiro. On their third ride together, they must defend the Plantation as they team up with Plantation 26 to get magma fuel. Miraculously, Hiro survives the third ride with Zero Two. This strengthens their bond as well. The rest of the anime follows the duo’s story as they fight Klaxosaurs, and a greater enemy is revealed.
