The Plot

Five Feet Apart Plot

Stella Grant has cystic fibrosis and utilises social media to cope with her disease while attempting to live a normal life. She encounters William “Will” Newman, a CF sufferer who is in the hospital for a drug trial to treat a bacterial illness caused by the bacteria B. cepacia He has in his lungs.

In order to decrease the potential of cross-infection, CF patients are kept six feet away. Contracting pathogenic bacterial infection from other CF patients can be serious – even life-threatening. Stella is committed to following the rules, and she dislikes Will at first because he likes to defy them and take perilous chances. Stella discovers that Will isn’t adhering to his treatment plan and eventually persuades him to do so.

Will and Stella fall in love and embark on their very first date in secrecy, maintaining only five feet apart, with Stella saying that she is “taking that foot — for us.” They end up at the hospital pool, where they strip down to display scars from previous procedures. Will’s birthday is the next day, so Stella plans a surprise dinner party for him with the help of Poe, Stella’s best friend and a fellow CF patient.

Trying to persuade Stella to return to the hospital, she is now adamant that there is no sense in extending her life by five years. Stella slides backwards and lands face first on the pond, cracking the ice and plunging into the water. Will is able to free her, but she is unable to breathe. He saves her by making the difficult decision to administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Will persuades Stella to take the lungs at the hospital. Will discovers that Stella somehow avoided contracting his infection after the lung transplant.

Stella sees Will through the window of her room after she wakes up from her surgery. He set up a light show outside her room, stating that his only regret is that she didn’t get to see the lights, so he’s brought them to her. He informs her that his drug trial is failing and that he does not want her to experience his eventual death. He expresses his love for her and offers her a notebook filled with his sketches of her. Will forces her to close her eyes, claiming that if she looks at him, he won’t be able to leave. Will walks away as Stella closes her eyes. It is strongly hinted that will dies shortly after this encounter.

Stella can be seen in a video on her YouTube channel years later, claiming she misses Will’s touch now that she has lost it forever.
