An actual producer, Shrikant Roy, who runs the studio Roy Talkies in Bombay, is currently looking for a newcomer to make their acting debut in his most recent movie, Sunghursh, as the main character, precisely one month before India’s Independence and Partition. He intends to use the alias “Madan Kumar” for the chosen individual.
Jamshed Khan, a stage performer, gets chosen. Jamshed, however, is currently having an extramarital relationship with Roy’s wife and prominent Bollywood actress Sumitra Kumari. Both of them intend to flee to Karachi. Binod Das, Roy Talkies’ right-hand man and projector boy, is dispatched to Lucknow to return Jamshed and Sumitra to the studio.
Binod encounters playwright Jay Khanna, Jamshed’s best friend, on the train to Lucknow. Jay Khanna’s family owns a theatre business in Karachi. He tries to persuade Kumari to accompany him back to Bombay, but she is adamant in her resolve and won’t budge. When Jamshed is ready to perform in a Hamlet play on stage under a new name, Binod runs into him.
Jamshed is subtly warned about the consequences of declining to play a role in Roy’s next movie. Jamshed, however, sneaks out of the theatre and boards a train toward Karachi. Jamshed cannot get a ride to the railway station as the riots start due to the announcement of the Partition.`
