Last Call’s humanizing urge pervades the entire series, but it’s most noticeable in the treatment of Anthony Marrero, a Puerto Rican sex worker whose background contrasts with the killer’s other white, more economically affluent victims. Last Call features some of the contemporaneous coverage of Marrero’s murder, which was dismissive at best and almost facile at times.

Last Call digs in with lengthy interviews with Marerro’s brother, who still can’t acknowledge that part of Marrero’s life, a friend who knew Marrero well, and Marrero’s great-nephew, who is trying to push back against the way Marrero was erased within his own family.

The end result is not, and cannot be, a complete portrait of Marrero. But it also makes him a person, someone memorable and complicated, someone loyal, with an enormous ability for charm, a man with a sense of style, a person who is not easily reduced to a homophobic headline or buried on a list of more white-coded names.

Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York Season 1 conducts this for as many victims as possible, with as much attention to numerous aspects of the victim’s life as possible. At the same time, the series tells the story of the inquiry into who killed these individuals through interviews with law enforcement agents, but many people back then, and some still do now, struggle with how to discover a killer who targeted a gay community.

Early in the documentary, we hear the director ask two former Pennsylvania state police officers who investigated one of the murders whether there are any questions the production team should have asked but did not.

Last Call finds new ways to address that question over and over. The simplest reason is that if police personnel cannot observe LGBT life, they will surely miss the specifics of these crimes. Aside from those who knew the victims, the most significant voices in Last Call are those who worked to expose and eradicate anti-gay violence in New York during when Bea Hanson and Matt Foreman of the New York Anti-Violence Project in the 1980s and 1990s.

As a result of their participation in the docuseries, Last Call may return to underline New York City as both a site of violence and a key haven for LGBT life. Last Call is about how each of these men found joy more than anything else in their lives.

The most startling aspect of viewing Last Call is how deeply, intensely sad it is, yet that surprise is weird.
