In 1997, the Richardsons’ home catches fire. A firefighter tells journalist Elena that she was inside when the house was deliberately set on fire. Elena had called the police four months ago after seeing a vehicle parked in the street. Later, she got a call from the car’s owner regarding a rental offer. Mia Warren, a mother of one and an artist, currently resides in her car with Pearl. Elena leases the home to Mia right away after determining that she is down on her luck and later calls the references stated on her rental application. When the Warren family moves in, Pearl makes friends with Moody, Elena’s son.

Izzy disputes with her mother over practicing an instrument and cutting her hair, and Elena maintains a controlled life. Pearl, meantime, is unhappy with the way her mother lives, which involves frequent city moves. Elena offers Mia a position as a home manager when she sees her working as a waiter. Mia rejects the offer after becoming angered. She decides against it, but after observing how much time Pearl spends at Elena’s home, she starts interacting with Izzy. One night, Mia wakes up from a disturbing dream in which she is being watched by a man on the train.

In 1983, when Pearl is sleeping in the rear of the car, young Mia engages in sexual activity with a male. Both moms prepare their children for the start of school in September 1997. Beginning her career as a home manager is Mia. Although Elena finds it difficult to approach Mia about her false references, Bill instructs his wife to do it. The guidance counselor at Shaker High School speaks with Pearl about her teachings. He doesn’t believe she has taken Geometry and wants to transfer to Algebra; he thinks she needs help. Pearl argues her position in writing and requests Elena’s opinion.

Lexie adapts Pearl’s letter into an essay for her Yale application. Elena goes to the guidance counselor to help Pearl with her issue, but she notices Izzy getting into more trouble at school. Elena runs a reading club, and when a conversation about women’s sexuality grows hot, Mia steps in and offers a viewpoint that gains her everyone’s admiration. After that, Mia acknowledges that she lied about her references and thanks Elena for renting her the home. Mia finds out at the restaurant that Bebe, an undocumented immigrant working as a waitress, also has a daughter.

Bebe hears her infant daughter sobbing in December 1996 and wakes up. She dashes to the shop to purchase formula but runs out of 70 cents. She leaves her daughter in the care of a fire station. Bebe tells Mia about her situation and how she is unable to care for her child because she fears getting deported at the Lucky Palace restaurant.

Elena informs Mia that Mirabelle is Chinese and that Linda and Marc adopted her as they get ready for Mirabelle’s first birthday celebration. To verify the baby is Bebe’s, Mia offers to shoot pictures of the event. For supper, Lexie invites Brian, who is her boyfriend. Also invited is Pearl. Brian learns that Lexie plagiarised Pearl’s essay at the dinner table.

To diffuse the situation, Lexie takes Pearl shopping for a homecoming dance attire. However, she soon begins to interrogate Pearl about her father. Pearl yells at her mother over her father. At the birthday celebration, Mia infiltrates Mirabelle’s chamber and verifies that she is May Ling before rushing to inform Bebe that she has located her daughter. Bebe shows up late because she has to visit her kid. Elena is adamant about learning and told Bebe about May Ling.

Linda gives birth to a stillborn child in May 1992. She worries that Bebe will return while the McCulloughs work to complete the adoption procedure right now. Izzy is permitted access to Mia’s workshop with one restriction: no inquiries. As Trip informs Moody that Pearl has friend-zoned him and is hanging out with Lexie, Moody becomes irate. Elena confronts Mia after learning that she told Bebe about May Ling. After that, Elena visits Lucky Palace to pick up her order and learns that Bebe also works there.

Young Elena and her high school sweetheart Jamie split up in Paris in 1976 because she wanted to go back home and start her preplanned life and he wanted to learn more about life. The Richardsons are now persuaded that Mia is a privately wealthy individual when Izzy shows Mia the photo from the New York Times in November 1997. However, Mia disputes it and becomes irate. Bebe is granted visiting privileges, and Linda accuses Elena of thinking Mia was assisting Bebe. Elena abandons everything and travels to New York to look into the “Duo” photograph.

Pennsylvania Young Mia leaves home in 1981 to enroll in the School of Visual Arts in New York City. When she meets her tutor Pauline, her artistic talent really begins to shine. Pauline introduces Mia to Anita at the gallery. Joe Ryan follows Mia on the train as she makes her way back home. His wife is unable to have children, therefore he wants to pay Mia to carry Mia’s children.

Mia accepts his offer because her college scholarship was unexpectedly reduced. Shaker 1983: Elena returns to work after having delivery, but shortly later is told she is expecting her fourth child while seeking advice about contraception. Bill and her mother both advise her to keep the child.

When Mia’s brother Warren pays her a visit in NYC, he learns that she is pregnant. He prods her to breach the terms of the surrogacy contract and retain the kid. Elena’s problems as a mother are still present in Shaker 1983. She drives to see Jamie while shopping for a pacifier for Izzy since she is desperate and lost; they exchange beverages and then head to the hotel.

Izzy is persuaded to go to a party in July 1997 by April, who is playing spin the bottle with pals. Despite being a perfect fit, April and Izzy are forced to have a secret kiss in the closet by their pals. Although they are exposed, April alleges molestation. In December 1997, as the custody dispute rages on, Elena confronts Mia about which child, Pearl or May Ling, is more deserving of keeping. Mia continues to testify, and Bill reprimands Elena for possibly tampering with a witness because he thinks Mia’s broken surrogacy contract has no bearing on the case.

Young Izzy brings home an abandoned cardinal in July 1991, but Elena reprimands her after it poops inside the house. Izzy picks up one of the bird’s feathers and retains it after being informed that it would probably die if it were rejected. The custody dispute is won by the McCulloughs, leaving Bebe in utter anguish. Mia reassures Bebe and Izzy that a solution will be found.

Mia is scolded by Pearl, who orders her to phone her father. Elena learns about the abortion and assumes Pearl was responsible. After informing Bill, he dismisses the information and accuses Elena of having an affair. Elena then accuses Bill of failing to provide adequate assistance for the upbringing of their children.

To avoid becoming like Elena, Lexie, Moody, and Trip then decide to set the home burn. When the investigator asks Elena who set the fire, she answers fully. The following day, Elena visits the rental property in search of Izzy. She discovers Mia’s artwork on a table, a small Shaker with a birdcage in the center and an Izzy-kept cardinal feather within. To make amends with them and present them to their grandchild, Mia goes back to her parents’ home.
