A little Australian programme has been busy creating its own mermaid narrative for a long time, well before Disney decided to bring a particular famous mermaid to life in its upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. In the spin-off series Mako Mermaids, which is based on the popular teen drama H2O: Just Add Water, the mermaids have legs when they’re on land. But they still struggle with the classic mermaid themes of having mixed feelings about being both in the water and among the so nice humans.
Mako Mermaids (known as Mako: Island of Secrets in Australia) follows adolescent kid Zac (Chai Hansen) as he returns to the mythical Mako Island where he is transformed into a merman. To complicate matters further: Three young mermaids who failed in their duty to protect the moon pool from humans were exiled by their pod as punishment. When they get kicked out of their pod, they go to land to figure out how to get back in without using Zac’s aquatic powers or fishtail.
Meanwhile, Zac is now faced with the reality that, when wet, he turns into a fish. After four years, Zac has adjusted well to his new life as a fish-man. Now, what should we do? What follows is all the information we have so far about Season 5.

There’s little doubt that doing so would make the series feel more current and appropriate for the present day. In the meantime, fans may show Netflix that they want a fifth season of Mako Mermaids by sharing the show with their friends.
