In Mrs. America, it can be seen that due to repeated harassment from her male coworkers and Fred Schlafly’s lack of support, Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative advocate of Barry Goldwater and a frequent candidate for Congress, decides against running again. She instead embarks on a new cause: preventing the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in 38 states.

As co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, Gloria Steinem uses her standing as editor-in-chief of Ms. magazine to lead the fight for women’s rights, including equal pay and access to abortion, while Schlafly uses her grassroots campaign to block ratification of the ERA in her native Illinois.

While Steinem advocates for abortion rights on the floor of the 1972 Democratic National Convention, Shirley Chisholm, an African-American congressman and presidential contender, swears to remain in the running. While tamping down racist connotations from Southern States participants, Schlafly attempts to turn the newly renamed Stop ERA movement into a nationwide conference.

Against the recommendation of Steinem and NOW, Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique and founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), challenges Schlafly to a discussion of the ERA. Friedan appears to be winning the argument until Schlafly gets on her nerves and Friedan loses her cool.

Brenda and Marc Feigen-Fasteau, a feminist couple, debate Fred and Phyllis Schlafly, a conventional marriage, who come to grips with Phyllis’s campaign and decide to go back to law school, while dealing with Brenda’s pregnancy and her experimentation with another woman. Phyllis attempts to support her perspective during the debate by citing a case, but when she is unable to do so, Brenda disproves Phyllis’ argument. Phyllis decides to enroll in law school as a consequence.

During the 1976 Republican National Convention, Jill Ruckelshaus, a pro-ERA and pro-choice Republican, fights to bring the party together in opposition to the increasing anti-ERA and pro-life movement led by Schlafly. Bill Ruckelshaus is selected as Gerald Ford’s vice-presidential running partner, but Jill and Bill are unhappy when they learn that Bob Dole was actually Ford’s first choice. To Bella Abzug’s chagrin, Chisholm makes an attempt to establish a committee to address sexual harassment among lawmakers and their female staff members. By collaborating with another group that wants to further a more fervently pro-life and anti-gay agenda, Schlafly hopes to increase the size of her mailing list.

Schlafly loses her left eye after being struck in the face with a pie by a male server shortly after making a speech at a luncheon. After running unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1976, Bella Abzug, a former congressman and co-founding member of the National Women’s Political Caucus, was chosen to lead the National Women’s Conference in Houston the following November. Schlafly is working on organizing a counter-rally for the day after the Houston conference.

The STOP ERA ladies are invited to the 1977 National Women’s Conference in Houston without Schlafly for the first time to advocate for their cause. After becoming disoriented by her surroundings, Alice visits the hotel bar where she meets a lady who initially seems like a bedmate but is actually a feminist. She is given an LSD-containing relaxation tablet by the woman. Then, Alice “trips” and seems to be doubting both her own opinions on women’s rights and the strategies employed by the STOP ERA group to attempt to succeed.

Much to the ire of Steinem and those who work with her, Carter dismisses Abzug as the chairman of his panel on women’s rights. Schlafly sets her sights on pursuing the original ERA ratification deadline extension and angling for a Cabinet job while supporting Reagan in 1980. After the victory, Reagan contacts Schlafly to thank her for her assistance but decline her request for a job in his new government because she is too divisive.
