Queen of South Season 6 Release Date Why Will the Show not Return?
The show, ‘Queen of South’, fist premiered on June 23, 2016, followed by seasons 2, 3, and 4 on June 8, 2017, June 21, 2018, and June 6, 2019, respectively. Then came season 5 on April 7, 2021. While the first four seasons had 13 episodes each, the fifth season had ten.
In march 2021, it was announced that season 5 would be the show’s final season.
There is no specific reason given for why the series is ending. However, it might be because it has run its natural course since this series has lasted five seasons. The show was cancelled on good terms with executive producers Dalin Rodriguez, Ben Lovato, and David Friendly, giving them a chance to write the ending they wanted.
Frances Berwick, NBCU Chairman of Entertainment Networks, told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2021. “For five incredible seasons, Queen of the South has captivated us with brilliant storytelling and bold, powerful characters. This series broke boundaries for the genre. We are so grateful to have worked with this incredible team of creators, cast, and crew, along with our studio partners at 20th Television and UCP. As we close this final chapter, we look forward to a great season culminating in a finale that will give our fans the ending they deserve.”
According to the announcement, USA Network has changed its direction and is now focusing on unscripted content that draws in a larger audience than scripted series. Accordingly, original shows will be aired on NBCUniversal’s streaming platform Peacock in the future, as well as other linear channels. With all these considerations in mind, Queen of the South season 6 seems unlikely.
In conjunction with the outbreak of COVID-19, filming the fifth and final season presented additional challenges. While nothing changed how things were supposed to go, Braga also indicated the cast and crew worked harder because they knew this would be the last season.
In April 2021, the actress told Forbes, “We got shut down when we were shooting episodes one and two. So when they shut us down, we knew it was our final season. I was very nervous because I was excited to finish the cycle by telling this story. So when we got shut down, we had the script, so we just carried on through the shutdown, working on the script and getting ready to come back. What was beautiful, in a way, was that the crew was so committed, so it was such a powerful comeback. After six months of being shut down, we had to trust each other even more.”
Co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez told Deadline about the chance to give the show a definitive ending. She said: “I felt this enormous amount of peace, ending the series, and an enormous amount of beauty. I think this series can be so dark, violent, and sad on many levels, and it starts in an unfortunate place, with what happens to Teresa in the pilot. There’s so much poetry, and beauty, ending the series in this sunny, beautiful place which is like nothing we’ve ever seen before on the show…I find that ending to be very, very emotionally satisfying, and I’m hoping the audience feels the same way.”
The US has brought the show to its conclusion, and it’s been almost a year since the series finale aired in the US, and there’s been no news of a Netflix overhaul. Fans can always rewatch their favorite shows on Netflix, even after the series has ended airing on USA Network. All five seasons are available to watch on Netflix after purchasing its subscription.
