Multiple murders, conspiracies, religious fanaticism, and psychopathy dominate Netflix’s new crime documentary, Sins of Our Mother. The three-part docuseries is a true story about a “Doomsday mom” from Idaho, Lori Vallow, and her extremist husband, Chad Daybell, who have been accused of committing three first-degree murders and four conspiracies relating to murder. The victims of this horrific “spiritual” couple include two of Lori’s children from previous marriages, a sixteen-year-old girl, Tylee Ryan, and a seven-year-old adopted son, JJ Vallow; Chad Daybell’s ex-wife, Tammy, and Lori’s ex and fourth husband, Charles Vallow.
Before their deaths, Charles Vallow and Tammy had reported that they feared their lives were in danger but were not taken seriously by the police. Charles Vallow was later shot to death by Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, who then claimed it was self-defense and suffered no legal consequences. Tammy died of “natural causes” a few weeks before Lori and Chad disappeared for days and came back married. What a coincidence right?
Very close to the day the two kids were declared missing, Lori had begun telling people her daughter, Tylee was at a college program. She also withdrew her son, JJ, from school, telling the teachers the boy was switching to homeschooling. After some time, JJ’s grandparents began to worry as they had not seen JJ for a while. They reported to the police, who asked Lori to bring the children to the authorities to prove their safety. Lori failed to do this, and instead, went on the run with her husband.
Sins of Our Mother follows these disturbing and suspicious events that led to the eventual arrest of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell in 2020. The true-crime miniseries narrates from the point of view of friends and family of the Mormon couple, especially Colby Ryan, Lori’s eldest and only surviving son. The narrative is not looking good for Lori and Chad as Janis Cox, Lori’s mother, confesses that her support has shifted away from her daughter, and Colby Ryan paints the picture of an unstable home filled with physical and sexual abuse.
In only three episodes, Sins of Our Mother uses past footage, words, witnesses, and limited evidence that have been made public by the FBI, to convey the cruelty, fear, and uncertainty involved in this terrifying murder case. The uncertainty covered is a result of the limited evidence actually available to the public, and the fact that Lori and Charles are yet to be tried. The two creepy couples will face a court trial in January 2023, and we will find out what punishment awaits them. Hopefully, justice is served.

Sins of Our Mother is directed by Skye Borgman, an American film director of other popular Netflix crime documentaries like Abducted in Plain Sight, Girl in the Picture, and I Just Killed My Dad. The show was produced under Lightbox Productions, a multi-platform media company founded by award-winning producers, Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn. Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn are also executive producers of the show alongside James Haygood, Skye Borgman, and Todd Garner.

All three episodes of Sins of Our Mother: ‘The 144000’, ‘Dark Spirits’, and ‘A Mother Knows’ respectively, premiered on September 14, 2022. The entire miniseries is about two hours and thirty minutes long, which makes it quite easy to binge-watch it.
Have Sins of Our Mother been renewed for season 2?
As of October 25, 2022, Sins of Our Mother has neither been canceled nor renewed for season 2. Our bet is on the latter. As the investigations proceed and the court trial approaches, we can hope to see the cast of Sins of Our Mother on screen again. We simply have to find out how all of this ends. Hopefully, Netflix has the same thought.

With many people enjoying the Netflix docuseries as they sympathize with the victims and witnesses, and slam Lori Vallow for being an emotional-stunted and destructive mother, Sins of Our Mother has ratings that recommend it. The miniseries has a rating of 7/10 on IMDb, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 92% on Google as of October 25, 2022.
