The Crown Season 6 Release Date, Cast, Story, and More

That settles it! Netflix has announced that The Crown Season 6 which will be the final season, will be the show’s last as ordered by the king. It was always intended from the start that The Crown would finish after five seasons, but after a while there, that plan was changed.

Thankfully, Peter Morgan, the show’s creator, had a change of heart about it by July 2020, so it isn’t the case anymore. In case you’re curious about the possible reasons for that, here’s his official statement from Netflix:

According to the writers, “when we began to debate the stories for series five, it immediately became evident that in order to do credit to the richness and complexity of the story we had to go back to the original concept and do six seasons.”

The palace doors will reopen for Season 6 of The Crown on Netflix. The show’s creator, Peter Morgan, changed his mind about ending the royal drama after the fifth season. “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it quickly became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said in a statement to Variety. Netflix UK is also tweeting about Morgan’s comments and the upcoming sixth season.

Morgan has changed his mind about a sixth season for the second time. Morgan claims that in January “I thought The Crown would run for six seasons when we started writing the stories for season 5, but it is now abundantly clear to me that this is the ideal time and place to end. I appreciate Netflix and Sony assisting me in making this decision.” At this point, his writing muse appears to have steered him back in the right direction.

Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming episode, including which prime ministers will be portrayed and why the Sussexes were left out.

The Crown’s Season 5 premiered on November 9, 2022. The source claims that season 6 will begin filming in 2022, with a 2023 premiere date being the most likely.

“As we started to consider the plots for Series 5, it immediately became evident that in order to do credit to the richness and complexity of the story, we needed to go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” creator Peter Morgan told Deadline. Series 6 will not bring us any closer to the present; rather, it will allow us to cover the same time period in greater depth.

What you’re saying makes complete sense. We also know that production on Season 6 has already begun because it was put on hold to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II after her passing. The streaming service confirmed to Deadline that filming on The Crown had been halted as a sign of respect. On the day of Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral, filming will also be halted. And since the queen died in September, they couldn’t have been filming Season 5 at that time, hence Season 6 is currently in development.

Update: Netflix hasn’t announced when The Crown Season 6 will stream into our lives, but based on prior releases, we can anticipate new episodes in November 2023.

According to a Netflix tweet, Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth in seasons 5 and 6. Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville will play Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, respectively. Elizabeth Debicki will play Princess Diana in the fifth and sixth films. Dominic West, who has appeared in The Wire and The Affair, is the most recent addition, though Netflix has not confirmed it. The Hollywood Reporter reported in October that West is in talks to play the philandering royal, just days after the married actor was seen making out with his The Pursuit of Love co-star Lily James in Rome.

After the fourth season, when Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, and Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles all end their reigns as monarchs, these actors will take their places. As is customary for the show, each cast member appears for two seasons.

In September 2022, the showrunners announced casting for the younger versions of Kate Middleton and Prince William. In season 6, William will be played by Ed McVey, 21, and Rufus Kampa, 16, respectively. Despite McVey’s extensive stage experience in London, both actors are relatively inexperienced. Meg Bellamy will portray Kate Middleton. She and Kampa were discovered after submitting audition tapes to a social media casting call.

What can we expect from the season’s climax? Despite Morgan’s lack of clerical skills, there are numerous story possibilities. The fifth season, which will focus on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, will transport us to the late 1990s. The most significant events of the decade are then examined.

We’ll probably see how the 9/11 attacks in Britain affected events after the Iraq War. The deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother will also need to be addressed during the season, and we expect to learn more about Queen Elizabeth II’s death near the end.

The focus of the story, as Morgan has previously stated, will not be Harry and Meghan’s romance. When Harry’s time comes, he may seek treatment, enlist in the British military, and then travel covertly to fight in the Iraq War.
