The Empress Season 2 Release Date, Plot, Cast, And More

Netflix knows its audience enjoys a good hot period drama. The streamer has brought us back in time to the year 1854, when a defiant princess marries the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph, and enters the political realm of the Viennese court as Empress of Austria. Due to the soap-like ups and downs (mainly downs, unfortunately) of her life, the narrative of the young ‘Sisi’ (or ‘Sissi’ depending on who you ask) at the heart of the Habsburg empire has long been a popular theme in Austrian and German history.

That’s why German streaming service Netflix commissioned Sommerhaus Serien to adapt her narrative for television. Despite the fact that Netflix hasn’t officially greenlit season two (though that day is undoubtedly coming), there’s plenty of material to work with after that shocking cliffhanger, and sumptuous royal-themed period dramas tend to do well on Netflix.

The Empress Season 2 Release Date

The Empress Season 2 Release Date

Netflix has not provided a firm premiere date for the second season of The Empress. The Empress has a high enough rating (7.9/10 on IMDB) to guarantee a second season based on ratings alone. The show has attracted a large audience and received mostly excellent reviews, so an announcement about its renewal is likely imminent. We can anticipate season two of The Empress before 2023, despite the fact that the show has been out for less than a month.

The Empress Season 2 Plot

The Empress Season 2 Plot

After visiting the iron factory and giving her shoes to a young girl in need, Elisabeth is imprisoned within the palace gates at the conclusion of The Empress for violating royal protocol (displaying compassion). Elisabeth gives in to her sorrow when she realizes nothing will be done to help the poor, and she begins to spend her time drinking and partying with Franz’s brother Maximillian, further tarnishing her reputation.

Archduchess Sophie, clearly at her wit’s end with the defiant Empress, that Elisabeth return to Bavaria, and Franz, who has a heated argument with his wife and accuses her of having an affair with his brother, agrees. But just as Franz is about to advise Elisabeth to leave, she finds out she’s expecting. The Empress is devastated by the news but refuses to tell her husband. By the time Elisabeth is ready to go, a large, angry throng has gathered at the palace gates to criticize the Emperor, effectively blocking the exit.

Even if the guards seek to have the carriage turned around, Elisabeth insists that the gates be opened. The Empress, watched by Franz and Sophia, announces her pregnancy to the throng with an enthusiastic “I see you” and an embrace. Will they accept her if she acts? If she were to forgive Franz, would she? Sophie is expecting; what are her future plans? What we do know, provided the play stays close to the historical record, is that the Archduchess will continue to make Elisabeth’s existence behind the palace gates a miserable one.

Only ten months after marrying the Duke, the Empress gave birth to a daughter whom she named Archduchess Sophie of Austria. The older Archduchess named the infant after herself and took full custody of the newborn without consulting Elisabeth, who was not allowed to take part in the child’s care or to breastfeed. Another daughter was born to Elisabeth a year later, and rumor has it that Sophie wrote a vicious pamphlet condemning her son-in-law for failing to produce a male heir.

The Empress Season 2 Cast

The Empress Season 2 Cast

If Netflix agrees to bring the program back, it’s likely that the original cast would return, including Devrim Lingnau, who played the Empress, and Philip Froissart, who played her husband (fingers crossed). It’s likely that if The Empress gets renewed for a second season, every single original cast member will return.

Elisabeth, the Beloved Empress, will be portrayed once again by Devrim Lingnau. You may also count on seeing Melika Foroutan (Tribes of Europa) as the emperor, Phillip Froissant as Franz Joseph, Elisa Schlott as Helen, and Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian. The role of Princess Ludovika is played by Jordis Triebel. Raymond Tarabay, Hanna Hilsdorf, and Svenja Jung (as Amalia and Louise) (Ambassador De Bourqueney).

Where To Watch The Empress?
