Per HBO’s official rundown, “The White House Plumbers” tells the section of how Nixon’s partisan saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally collapsed the Presidency they were keenly trying to protect.

The imperfect series is based, in part, on public archives, as well as Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh’s 2016 book, “Truthfulness: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons from the White House.”

“In the record of the Watergate pictures ever made, basically the burglary is the opening scene,” Mandel said. “You see flashes of the burglary, and then it’s people in the Oval Office, [President Richard] Nixon, and the newspapers at the Washington Post. This is an imperfect series where it is 100 out of each hundred about the burglary. We’re going to meet these guys before the robbery, and we’re going to see the properties of the burglary on their lives. This is the section that none of these other [stories] bothered with, to about extent.”The Leading Men

Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers”) stars in conjunction with Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”) in “The White House Plumbers.” Theroux plays G. Gordon Liddy, an advocate and former FBI agent who controlled Richard M. Nixon’s election crusade before being agreed to a covert White House Special Inquiries unit called, you fathomed it, the White House Plumbers. The team, which also encompassed E. Howard Hunt (have fun by Harrelson), was bent shortly after the Pentagon Papers were published and taxed with averting further leaks of classified material to the media. (Hence, “plumbers.”)

Hunt, in the meantime, was a retired CIA officer when he was enlisted to serve in Nixon’s White House. Once an appreciated intelligence officer, Hunt’s standing took a hit after the Bay of Pigs disaster in 1961. (His employees were transported in to overthrow Fidel Castro’s regime, thus ligature him to the aborted invasion.)

Lengthways with their team, Hunt and Liddy planned the burglary of the Independent National Committee headquarters in May and June of 1972, which in turn brought about Richard Nixon’s letter of resignation from office.

“It’s attractive,” Mandel said. “Howard Hunt was just a guy callous in some ways to induce his glory days; he [blamed] Kennedy for what he had misplaced at the Bay of Pigs and was just trying to get back roughly of that magic.
