Hulu’s new series, This Fool, is the people’s definition of what comedy TV shows should look like these days. This Fool is a comedy series about Julio Lopez, a thirty-year-old who tries to help everybody but himself, and his cousin, Luis, an ex-gangster who just got out of prison. The show brings to us a community in South Central, Los Angeles, where reformed thugs bake cupcakes. 30-year-olds ditch their tinder dates for their unstable girlfriend since high school, broke men run a non-profit, and rules are broken for an unlimited supply of soft toilet paper.
The comedy series has received much praise for its authenticity, relatable portrayal of a Hispanic family, and sense of humor. Here is the official description of This Fool.
This Fool Season 1 Release Date
This Fool began filming in November 2021 and concluded in February 2022. The official trailer was then released on July 19, 2022, and Season 1 of This Fool premiered on August 12, 2022, with all ten thirty-minute-long episodes dropping on the Hulu streaming platform. The comedy series was created by stand-up comedian, Chris Estrada in conjunction with Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson, and Jake Weisman. Award-winning actor and comedian, Fred Armisen, is the producer of This Fool.
This Fool Season 1 Storyline
In the first episode of This Fool, Julio is introduced to us as the kind of cowardly nice guy that can’t tell a group of thugs to get off his driveway and allows his on-and-off girlfriend to take his car when he also needs it, just because he can’t say no to people. Julio is supposed to pick up his cousin, Luis, who just got out of jail after being in there for 8 years. Now, without a car, Julio has to take the bus. Cut to the part where Julio introduces Luis to Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation non-profit he works at, and becomes his case manager.
In the episodes that follow, we see a lot of denial from both men who refuse to face their problems. Julio refuses to confront his feelings for Maggie, and Luis hides his childhood trauma behind jokes and tough acts. Tension builds between the cousins as both avoid confronting their true feelings. At the point where the cousins have had enough of each other, a therapist advises them to take a step back, which means breaking up their work relationship. Julio gets a new client, and Luis gets a new case worker. The two agree, but soon makeup when they realize they understand each other better than their new partners ever could.
Julio and Luis aren’t the only two who make up. Maggie and Julio also get back together and almost move in together toward the end of the season. We also see the Lopez family struggle under the controlling roof of Esperanza, Julio’s mother, who is so used to taking care of people that she goes overboard sometimes.
Toward the end of the season, the non-profit gets in trouble. There is no more money to keep it running. Luis helps the director, Minister Payne, come up with a plan to get donations. The plan works up to the point where they get a billionaire interested in donating, but on a sexually disturbing condition. Minister Payne, who hates the power that gets the rich folks all they want, is reluctant to take on this condition at first but ends up giving in because of how important the Huggers are to him. The billionaire and his wife get to satisfy their weird threesome fetish but don’t end up keeping their promise.
In the season finale of This Fool, we see Luis to all the people he had offended in the past. Julio breaks up with Maggie, completely breaking her heart, and Minister Payne decides to shut down Hugs Not Thugs. Except for Luis, the other characters appear to still have a lot more life drama to offer. There has been no announcement of This Fool Season 2, but we are sure hoping there will be one.
