Could this be us in eleven years? Amazon’s sci-fi series, about evil tech monopolies and virtual afterlives, is coming back for a third season. Here is everything we know about Upload Season 3.
Upload is a science fiction comedy-drama created for Prime Video by American screenwriter and producer Greg Daniels, popularly known for creating The Office. Amazon first ordered a pilot of the series on September 8, 2017, followed by a ten-episode order for season 1 on July 28, 2018. Upload premiered on May 1, 2020, produced by Amazon Studios in conjunction with Greg Daniel’s Deedle-Dee Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Reunion Pacific Entertainment. Since then, only one more season of seven episodes has been released. Upload Season 3 is on its way, though.
The executive producers of Upload are Greg Daniels and Howard Klein, founding partners of 3 Arts Entertainment. Upload is a single-camera comedy-drama filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Upload Season 3 Release Date
Upload was renewed for season 3 on May 11, 2022, two months after the premiere of season 2 on March 11. The third season began filming on August 18, 2022 and is expected to wrap up by November. But that’s just the filming stage, which does not take long at all. The post-production stage, however, will take a lot longer than that because of the series’ heavy reliance on visual effects. For this reason, we can be rest assured that Upload Season 3 is unfortunately not premiering this year. We can hope to see Upload Season 3 around mid-2024, though.
Upload Season 3 Plot
Upload is set in a futuristic world (2033) where humans can “upload” their souls into a virtual afterlife, and continue to “live”, although restricted, in a digital heaven known as Lakeview. Like every exceptionally advanced technology, Lakeview is for the rich, and deliberately so. When Nathan Brown, a computer programmer, makes a free version for the poor, some power players conspire to murder him in a car accident. They succeed, but having a rich girlfriend, Ingrid Kannerman allows Nathan the luxury of being “uploaded”.
Now another living dead in Lakeview, Nathan gets a living woman, Nora Anthony, as his handler. With the help of Nora and Nathan’s cousin Fran, it’s not long before it is accepted that Nathan was murdered. But why? How? Who?
Upload follows the journey of Nathan and Nora as they try to take down the corporation behind Lakeview, Horizon, and its political subordinate, Free yond. They teamed up with the anti-tech movement The Ludds in order to do this. While they are busy solving Nathan’s murder and taking down evil corporations, his possessive girlfriend Ingrid is busy playing her own games in a bid to keep her boyfriend by her side, and away from Nora.
Upload Season 3 Storyline
With the nose-bleeding cliffhanger in the season 2 finale, and the fact that the second season was three episodes shorter than the first, fans of Upload are impatient. We want a third season fast. There are a lot of questions left to answer. What happens to Nathan now that the download of his soul into a new body has seemingly failed? Does Ingrid succeed with her plan to create a new Nathan entirely? Do the Ludds, Nathan and Nora stop Freeyond?
As we are still many months from a premiere announcement, it’s hard to tell what is going to happen in Upload Season 3. From several interviews, we know Greg Daniels has a lot planned for season 3, saying he is “plotting more stuff now with some writers”. Then also, Andy Allo (Nora) has announced a wish for her character to take everything to hell and radically change the world in the next season. Whether the vision of the creator and actress will align remains unknown.
Upload Season 3 Cast
‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Season 5 winner, Jeanine Mason, is the only new addition to the cast of Upload Season 3 that we know of. Jeanine Mason has been cast as Karina Silver, “a charming senior Horizen executive in charge of new product development and cybersecurity.” Aside from this new development, most of the old cast will be back, of course. Some of the cast we will see in Upload Season 3 are:

- Zainab Johnson as Aleesha, Nora’s best friend, and coworker
- Scott Patey as Josh Pitzer, an executive wanting to purchase the program for Beyond
- Owen Daniels as A.I. Guy, a virtual worker at Lakeview.
Upload Season 3 Rating
For its first two seasons, Upload has generally received favorable reviews, with many praising its witty writing and charming cast. Upload Season 1 has a rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 67/100 on Metacritic. The second season performed better, garnering a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 72/100 on Metacritic. Both seasons have an average rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb.
