This anime is about a teenager named Ushio Aotsuki. Ushio’s family maintains a temple. While doing the household chores, Ushio discovers a hidden cellar. He finds a gigantic monster named Tora trapped by a spear. Tora revealed that its ancestors trapped him against a rock with “Beast Spear” 500 years ago.

When Tora forces Ushio to free him, Ushio ignores him. But after finding that his house is surrounded by yokai, he depends on Tora to release him. Since Ushio released Tora, it gave him the advantage of being the master of the demon and having control over the evil. The rest of the series focuses on the relationship of Ushio and Tora while battling evil and how their journey is while battling supernatural beings threatening the world.

In season 2 of the series, the Beast Spear almost gets destroyed, making everyone around Ushio forget his existence. Hakumen no Mono is still trapped in the sea by Ushio’s mother, Sumako. In the previous season, it is revealed that destroying it would lead to the sinking of the entire Japan into the sea.

The yokai also end up recreating another Beast Spear by sacrificing Mayuko. Meanwhile, Ushio and Tora meet Hyou, and they find out Hyou still remembers them because of his magical crystal ball. You also find out about his family’s murderer, who was a yokai named Guren.

Atsuzawa meets an imposter of Jei Mei and destroys the stone pillar in which HAkumen is trapped. Ushio and Sumako end up meeting in season 2 of the series. Harkumen also ends up escaping from the stone pillar, which causes earthquakes all over Japan. The finale shows how Ushio defeats Hakumen with the help of Tora.

The last episode shows Hakumen agreeing to be jealous of the world and becomes a bundle of fury and trying to destroy the world. Ushio and Tora fought Hakumen and defeated him. During Hakumen’s last moments, it asks for its name to be called. However, it could not finish its last word. This scene made the entire audience sympathize with Hakumen.

The series ends when Tora conceals the Beast Spear inside him not to let Hakumen come to their location. Tora also revealed that this was why he stayed in the cellar for 500years. Tora also revealed the real story of Nagare’s death and that Tora did not kill him out of spite. Tora dies, saying he has gotten everything he ever wanted during his time with Ushio. This scene made Tora the most beloved character of the series.

A year later, a peaceful Ushio is shown. Ushio, Asako, Mayako and Kiro are on their way to school. The finale shows Ushio valuing his mother’s food over anything. He has Miso soup before leaving for school, the dish he was always desperate for. Meanwhile, Mayuko, even after one year, still could not hear the word hamburger without tearing up, and Kiro declares that he will eat every hamburger in front of him.

The final scene shows Ushio staring at where he and Tora first met. This episode received a lot of ratings and positive reviews from critics and fans due to its brilliant portrayal of emotions.
