After arriving back from 16th century London, Diana and Matthew set out on a journey to discover the lost sections of the Book of Life. They also want the Congregation to pay for Diana’s Aunt Emily’s demise. Their first priority is the twins developing within Diana, who represent a danger to the Congregation’s survival. The witches Peter Knox and Satu Jarvinen aren’t their sole foes; a ferocious vampire named Benjamin Fuchs is also on the hunt for them.

While collaborating with a Yale scientist to find a way around the Covenant’s ban on interspecies marriage and conception, Matthew is forced to confront the consequences of his past. Meanwhile, Diana is polishing her skills so that when they finish the Book of Life, she can reveal its secrets.
