HBO Hacks season 2 Max is arguably one of the year’s best new shows. The Emmy-winning dark comedy follows Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), a young comedy writer who must collaborate with seasoned stand-up comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) to save both of their careers.
Given how well Hacks was received by critics when it debuted in May 2021, it’s no surprise that HBO Max renewed the show for a second season in June of the same year. “I am overjoyed that a second season has been ordered,” Smart said. “Hannah was informed that Bette and Joan would be filling in for Miss Nice Guy in the future.” You may be wondering who BETTE is.
Hacks Season 2 Release Date
Season 2 of Hacks will premiere on HBO Max on May 12, 2022. Similarly to Season 1, two new episodes will be released each week until the final pair airs on June 2.
Hacks Season 2 Cast
Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder complete Hacks’ one-two punch of Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels. The first season demonstrated that the two had excellent chemistry, and as their characters’ relationships develop, this should only improve.
Smart has recently been on fire. In addition to Hacks, she has also voiced characters in the popular adult animated series Big Mouth and the hit 2021 series Mare of Easttown. Smart’s other notable works include Legion, Watchmen, Fargo, 24, Garden State, and other well-known works. She will also play the lead in Damien Chazelle’s upcoming film Babylon.
Einbinder was completely surprised by the first season of Hacks (she had just three other credits in little-known projects prior).
Carl Clemons-Hopkins plays Marcus, Christopher McDonald plays Marty, Kaitlin Olson plays DJ, Paul W. Downs plays agent Jimmy, Megan Statler plays Jimmy’s assistant, Kayla, Poppy Liu plays Kiki, Rose Abdoo plays Josefina, Mark Indelicato plays Damien, Angela E. Gibbs plays Marcus’s mother, Luenell plays Miss Loretta, Johnny Sibilly plays Wilson, Joe Mande plays Wilson.
New regular cast members include Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen, and Susie Essman. Devon Sawa and Margaret Cho have been confirmed as guests.
Hacks Season 2 Storyline
Deborah decides to tour with her newly honed stand-up routine that she developed with Ava at the end of Season 1 of Hacks. The official plot synopsis for Season 2 of HBO Max states that it will expand on that conclusion.
In Season 2 of Hacks, the dark mentoring relationship between renowned Las Vegas comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her ambitious young writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) deepens as the two travel the country working on Deborah’s brand-new stand-up act.
The show will continue to explore the ups and downs of Ava and Deborah’s romance and will do so while they are on the road this time. According to the show’s creators, who discussed this at their PaleyFest panel in early April, Ava and Deborah will visit the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Altadena, Long Beach, and even a ship in international waters this season.
Ava also ended Season 1 by emailing two television producers she had previously met while intoxicated, detailing all of Deborah’s abuse. At the 10th Annual SCAD TVfest in February 2022, Downs, one of the show’s three showrunners, hinted that Season 2 would cover the aftermath of this incident.
Furthermore, Downs hinted at the SCAD TVfest that this season would focus on Deborah’s feelings about repeatedly failing after not failing for so long.
Deborah was frequently portrayed as an abrasive narcissist in the first season of Hacks. Still, she was also shown at her most vulnerable, particularly in Episode 6 when she revealed how she never burned down her ex-house despite what she became known for. Husbands Deborah and Ava will most likely continue to have tender exchanges throughout Season 2 — amidst all the fighting and insults.
