Muv-Luv, a visual novel, is split into two halves. Playable character Takeru Shirogane (voiced by Takeshi Aiba in the Windows version and Soichiro Hoshi in ports) awakens one morning to discover a stunning young woman sleeping in his bed, just as an irate Sumika Kagami (voiced by Hiroko Taguchi, credited as Rika Fujiwara in the Windows version), Takeru’s neighbor and childhood friend, arrives to wake him up that morning. The first part, titled Muv- The young woman, Meiya Mitsurugi, is the heiress of a wealthy family and is eager to be Takeru’s wife (voiced by Aki Okuda in the Windows version and Kazumi Okushima in ports).

As the plot develops, both females vie for Takeru’s attention, and Takeru experiences recurrent nightmares about an earlier promise he made to a girl: that he would marry her. At first, he thinks the female was Sumika, but later he discovers it was Meiya. Takeru will have to decide at the end which female he really loves. The player can also decide between the three primary supporting characters, Kei Ayamine, Miki Tamase, and Chizuru Sakaki (voiced by Masayo Kurata), who are all female (voiced by Nagashima Yuuko).

Similar to the beginning of Muv-Luv Extra, the second volume, Muv-Luv Unlimited, begins with Takeru Shirogane waking up in his bed. However, Takeru soon finds that neither Meiya nor Sumika came to wake him that morning. When he leaves his home, he discovers that a sizable mecha has crushed Sumika’s home beneath the ruins of his neighborhood.

Later on, Takeru discovers that he is in an alternate universe to Extra, where humans are fighting back against alien invaders with mecha known as Tactical Surface Fighters or Senjutsuki in Japanese. BETA is an acronym for “Beings of Extra-Terrestrial origin which are Adversary of the human race,” and in this world, aliens called BETA have invaded.

According to Muv-Luv Unlimited, the BETA first touched down on Earth in 1973 (in China and Canada), having previously made stops on the Moon and Mars in 1958 and 1967, respectively. By the time the game begins in 2001, much of continental Eurasia has been lost as a consequence of further wars with BETA, bringing the total population down to 2.4 billion.

With the notable exceptions of Takeru, who is rumored to be dead, and Sumika, who doesn’t seem to exist in the Unlimited timeline, most of the important characters from the Extra timeline are present in Unlimited. The majority of the characters are the same as their Extra counterparts, with the significant exception of Yoroi, Takeru’s best friend in Extra, who is a female in this world for unknown reasons.

Takeru awakens three years after the start of Unlimited in the follow-up Muv-Luv Alternative to discover himself back in his room. Although at first, he believes the events of Muv-Luv Unlimited were just a dream, he quickly gets the feeling that something is off. He exits the home and discovers that he has been thrown back in time to the commencement of the events in Unlimited. He resolves to assist professor Kouzuki in saving the Earth and humanity by implementing the secret Alternative IV plan, which was shelved at the conclusion of Unlimited because he is unwilling to accept the events at the end of the series.

Then Tsukuyomi approaches Sagiri, telling him that his uprising has already revealed the corruption in the government and will bring about the change he desired, so she would allow him to die an honorable death in combat. Sagiri fights in one final combat with Tsukyomi, knowing that he would die regardless of the result, and is cut down by her sword. The rebel troops submit and the peace is reestablished with Sagiri’s death. To stop another rebellion from occurring, Yuuhi pledges to change the government. The 207th mourns the loss of loved ones while completing training and becoming fully qualified TSF pilots. As Alternative IV moves to the next phase, Yuuko and Sakon scheme in the background.

The plot line of Muv-Luv Alternative Season 2 is highly expected to have the same roots but till the official announcements about the same are not released let’s keep our seat belts loosen to patiently wait.
