Night Sky Season 1 Recap
Franklin and Irene York (J.K. Simmons, Sissy Spacek) had been together for a long time, as evident when they first met in the pool hall. They had gotten used to being senior citizens and talking about all the little things older married couples talk about. But their affection for one another is still quite apparent. Franklin has also been caring for Irene since her accident a year ago.
Recently, Irene has expressed a desire to “see the stars” more frequently. But it involves more than just going outside and looking up in the backyard. A hidden tunnel under their tool shed leads to a “chamber,” which takes them to an observation tower on a distant planet. They have a comfortable setup there, and after visiting it over 800 times, they are familiar with the transportation process. Franklin becomes sick, for example. But they never leave the house. Franklin believes that enough is enough and that the chamber should be public knowledge. Irene disagrees, though.
However, they become less capable of caring for one another and themselves as they age. After dropping Irene off at the doctor’s, Franklin gets sidetracked by a surprise visit from their granddaughter Denise (Kiah McKirnan). Denise had received a Facebook message from the Yorks’ new neighbors, Byron and Jeannie Albemarle (Adam Bartley, Cass Buggé), informing her that someone had been wandering around their yard at odd hours. He waits to pick her up till he gets home and remembers to do so.
To pass the time, Irene, who is still using a wheelchair, goes to a nursing home and discusses the subject with an old acquaintance suffering from dementia.
Irene decides to return to the chamber and ultimately venture outdoors after realizing she only has a limited amount of time left and hasn’t decided to tell Franklin. But Irene discovers something unexpected there.
