The Johnson family moves from California to Los Angeles in a completely different neighbourhood as Dave’s wife Gemma gets a job as a high school principal in L.A. Dave’s friendly and neighbourly approach towards Calvin makes him wary of Dave. As the series progresses, Calvin changes and discovers the Johnsons are a much-needed part of the Neighborhood for the better.

The sitcom shows the cultural impact of race and stereotypes in different communities. It highlights the differences between the two communities and also shows their commonalities. As the story shows different aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement, gentrification, marriage and losses, it provides a wholesome commentary on how racial differences create a massive cultural impact.

The show provides a welcome relief from everyday stress due to its funny and sometimes brow-raising jokes on daily issues as it shows us different perspectives. We also see familial strife in the two families, such as Calvin’s view of his older unemployed son and Calvin’s relationship with his father in turn. Also, we see how the characters do professionally as they progress through their careers and retirements. As the relationship between the two families grows, we see them helping each other get through problems and support each other despite their differences.
