By the renowned creator of Hamilton and In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda, this drama is an adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical. Tick, tick…BOOM!, starring Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Robin de Jess, Bradley Whitford, and others, is set in 1990s New York City during the AIDS pandemic, which ripped entire neighborhoods apart.

Tick, Tick…Boom!” is a film adaptation of the late Larson’s autobiographical play, which he penned while working on “Rent,” the renowned musical theatre production that would shake the world. Larson, on the other hand, never got to see it in person; he died at the age of 35 on the morning of the show’s first off-Broadway preview performance.

Jon, a theatre composer keeps hearing a ticking sound in his head which he interprets as a countdown to the time he has left. He keeps hearing the call of something great and knows he has to bring that piece to life but that in itself is a mammoth task.

Larson’s thoughts over the eight days leading up to the workshop of his unproduced musical “Superbia” and his 30th birthday are explored in “Tick, Tick…Boom!” It asks how we may make the most of the time we have and captures the stress of being a struggling artist who aspires to achieve greatness.

Pre-production began soon after the film was announced, with Lin-Manuel Miranda teasing that he was working on the project as late as October 10th, 2019. The most recent filming date was March 12, 2020. On the day the production was shut down, they were filming outside Jonathan Larson’s previous home, according to IMDb. The film has been in development since 2017 and will premiere on Netflix later this fall.

About Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson, an American playwright, and composer are best known for his Tony Award-winning musical Rent. Larson was exposed to the performing arts at an early age while growing up in Whitetail, New York. He learned to play the trumpet, tuba, and piano as a child and sang in the school chorus. Larson returned to New York after spending the summer in a theatre program in Michigan and settled into a Lower Manhattan flat.

Larson worked at the Moondance Diner on weekends during his time in New York but was hard at work creating and producing music during the week. Larson’s own experiences would permeate into the pages of the musical, which would eventually become the Tony Award-winning musical Rent. He spent years on the project, collaborating and editing what is now known as the musical
