Mark Bonnar as Max McCall and Jamie Sives as Jake McCall shines as the two brothers who kill an older man while driving home one night. They are supported by equally impressive performances by Ruth Bradley, as Angie, the niece of Walter, the dead older man; Emun Elliot, as private detective Kenny who Max hired to address Angie’s fears; Ellie Haddington, as a blackmailing neighbour; Sian Brooke, as Max’s wife; and Bill Paterson as a local gangster. The cast creates the perfect ensemble for this comedic turn of events. Each supporting role is integral in making the show the perfect blend of comic, dark and touching work.

Mark Bonnar as Max and Jamie Clive as Jake has been a constant since the first season and would have been a welcome site even in subsequent seasons. However, since the show is officially ended, season 3 is the last we will see of any of these characters.

Max and Jake are two very different types of brothers who knock down an older man in a deserted Edinburgh street; their decision to cover up the accident leads to events spiralling out of control as a suspicious relative, a seemingly inquisitive neighbour and a drunk private detective all get pulled into the mess. No one is who they seem initially, as all characters have motivations.

The subsequent season also introduces subplots of a prison term, Bill Paterson as a local gangster and the involvement of a mysterious Phoenix company. The dark, gritty and yet amusingly funny script and each subplot that come together in the end remark the series’ success amongst its viewers. The third season provides a chance for redemption for Max, Jake and several other characters in the story.
