Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Spirited Away is a Japanese animated fantasy film which is animated by Studio Ghibli for Nippon Television Network, Tokuma Shoten, Dentsu, Mitsubishi, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, and Tohokushinsha Film. The plot of Spirited Away is about a 10-year-old girl, Ogino, who shifts to a new neighborhood and enters the world of Kami. When her parents are turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba, Chihiro joins Yubaba’s bathhouse to free herself and her parents, eventually going back to the human world.

The first film was released a long time back in 2001. Although the film received decent feedback, the makers did not confirm anything about a potential sequel, and since it’s been almost 21 years, the makers might discuss the possibilities of a second part.
A comic book was also released and developers might decide to follow the storyline from that. It focuses on a little girl who moves to the suburbs and discovers a world that has been taken over by Yubaba. She then finds the old arachnoid Kamaji and his army of soot balls, but she cannot help them. Lin the slug girl comes to offer lunch and Kamaji tells her to take Chihiro. Chihiro is introduced to the bath house wonderland where she worked and her boss Yubaba. Yubaba gives Chihiro the name of Sen, and the latter is asked to scrub floors and is also made fun of by other workers for being human.
There have been instances where sequels were made after 10-15 years and they were successful at the box office. There were a few that failed regarding box office collections and critical response. But the sequel to Spirited Away might work if the developers decide to hire the same writer and director for it.
