Part 1

On March 15, 1972, The Godfather was published. Francis Ford Coppola helmed the major motion picture, which was adapted from the same-titled book by Mario Puzo. An attempt at assassination occurs when Don Vito Corleone rejects Virgil Sollozzo’s invitation to work in the drug trade with him at the start of the story. Later, when Sonny, Vito’s eldest son, takes over the family company, they plan to use Michael to kill Sollozzo and a corrupt police captain as retaliation for the attempted assassination. This will force Michael to flee to Sicily in secret. Michael spends time in Sicily touring the region and falls in love with a woman he marries but who is later killed in a car bombing.

After learning of his brother Sonny’s murder, Michael leaves for America, where he marries Kay, his ex-girlfriend. After that, Michael is given control of the family by Vito. Prior to the relocation, Michael’s father passes away, prompting him to devise a plan to assassinate the heads of the five families on the day of his nephew’s baptism. Michael had intended to move the family business to Las Vegas. The abusive marriage of Vito’s daughter, Johnny Fontane’s success in Hollywood, and the involvement of Vito’s second son Fredo in the family business in Las Vegas are some of the other subplots.

Part 2

On December 20, 1974, the sequel to The Godfather was released. Based on the same-titled novel by Mario Puzo, the feature-length movie was once more directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie features two parallel stories and serves as both a prelude and a sequel to The Godfather. The main plot, which picks up after the events of the first movie, centers on Michael Corleone, the new Don of the Corleone crime family, trying to keep his business endeavors together from 1958 to 1959; the other is a series of flashbacks that follow his father, Vito Corleone, from his early years in Sicily in 1901 to the establishment of the Corleone family in New York City.

Part 3

On December 25, 1990, The Godfather Part III was made available. In addition to directing the feature-length film, Francis Ford Coppola collaborated with Mario Puzo on the screenplay. It was Coppola’s belief that the first two movies had told the entire Corleone saga and that there was nothing more to add that caused him to turn down multiple requests from Paramount to make a third installment for more than a decade until severe financial difficulties brought on by the critical and commercial failure of One from the Heart (1982) compelled him to accept the long-standing offer. Coppola made this statement in his audio commentary for Part II.

It wraps up Michael Corleone’s tale, who is currently attempting to legalize his criminal organization, and demonstrates Vincent Corleone’s ascent to the position of Michael’s heir. Vincent Corleone is Sonny Corleone’s son by an unfaithful mother. A fictionalized version of actual events is also included in the movie, including the assassination of Pope John Paul I and the 1981–1982 Papal Banking Scandal, which is connected to Michael Corleone’s affairs. According to Coppola, he planned Part III to serve as a conclusion to the first two movies.

Unfortunately, Puzo’s passing in 1999 caused the movie to crumble. Coppola didn’t feel comfortable working on a new project without the motivation provided by the original author’s input. Coppola’s output had stagnated as he became involved with a number of litigation in the late ’90s, despite the fact that The Godfather: Part III’s box office success had not prevented Paramount Pictures from putting up another project. A decade would pass before Coppola would helm another motion picture after the box office failure of his John Grisham adaptation of The Rainmaker at Paramount. Making a new The Godfather movie without either of the two main writers was sacrilegious.

In other forms of media, the Corleone narrative was also attempted. The Godfather Returns and The Godfather’s Revenge, two new sequels to Puzo’s novels, were written by Mark Winegardner, but the events are very different from those depicted in the movies. In his 2012 book The Family Corleone, author Edward Falco sought to incorporate some of Puzo’s unproduced screenplay segments. However, the studio Paramount filed a lawsuit after the book’s release, and as a result, the studio now owns all rights to subsequent chapters.
