Episode six of Loki provided fans with something they had been waiting for: the official entrance of Jonathan Majors as comic book villain Kang the Conqueror. The strange man we encounter in the series finale is not the merciless lunatic monster from the comic books, but a somewhat more rational variant known only as he who remains. To compress the tale for the MCU version, He Who Remains, and Kang have been combined into a single character.

This version of Kang, despite his totalitarian grip on reality as the puppet master of the TVA, has a good side in that he is trying to stop a catastrophic multiversal conflict from breaking out. He says “see you soon” to Sylvie as she kills him, and then he watches as the Sacred Timeline splits into many parallel universes, each of which is likely to feature a more deadly version of himself. While Kang has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming Ant-Man film, set for release in early 2023, it is unknown whether he will play a larger role in Loki season two.

However, even if the Kang subplot is moved to the big screen, Tom Hiddleston’s epic science fiction drama will still have much to untangle as it deals with the fallout of a changed reality in which neither Agent Mobius nor Hunter B-15 recalls who Loki is. From the shocking climax, it seems Loki has been transported to an alternate world in which his escapades with the TVA never took place; however, it is not clear if Sylvie intentionally sent him there or if this shows that the cosmos is already out of control.

An arrogant variety of time-travelers is behind this meddling, as a large statue of Kang has been installed in the TVA offices, taking up the space formerly occupied by a shrine to the made-up Time-Keepers. Judge Ravonna Renslayer, who departed the TVA headquarters through a tempad link in search of the agency, has also been left in the dark.

The two villains may have their first meeting in Loki’s second season, as in the comics she becomes the love interest and right-hand woman of Kang the Conqueror. In an interview with Collider, the show’s first-season showrunner, Kate Herron, said that she would not be returning for the next chapter. but that she, too, had many doubts regarding the show’s renewal.

Not very long ago, it would have been unthinkable to accept a branch of the MCU without Tom Hiddleston as Loki. but the introduction of Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie has made that possibility more palatable.

For a cast during the first season of Loki, when episodes were released weekly, it appeared like she might replace him, especially after the brief death fake-out in episode 4. Set photographs from the second season of Loki have already been released, confirming the return of not just Hiddleston but also Di Martino, Owen Wilson’s Mobius, Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15, and maybe Tara Strong’s Miss Minutes. Ravonna Renslayer, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, disappeared, but she’ll be back.

Since Jonathan Majors will also be featured in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and since Kang the Conqueror’s monument appeared at the end of Loki’s final episode, it is safe to assume that he will repeat his role as a version of He Who Remains. With Kang set to be the villain in The Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it’s hard to imagine that the show that first introduced Kang the Conqueror wouldn’t bring him back for season two. Final casting news: Ke Huy Quan (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once) will be a part of Loki Season 2, it was announced during the D23.
