Created for ABC by Marissa Jo Cerar, Women of the Movement is an American historical drama miniseries that is based on the book Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement by Devery S. Anderson. The book Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America, by Mamie Till-Mobley and Christopher Benson was also included in the project last year.

Cerar is also the executive producer of the series along with Gina Prince-Bythewood, Jay Brown, Will Smith, James Lassiter, Rosanna Grace, John P. Middleton, Jay-Z, Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, Aaron Kaplan, Dana Honor, Alex Foster, and David Clark.

The makers have hired some talented stars for the characters of this American miniseries that includes Adrienne Warren, Gary Basaraba, Glynn Turman, Chris Coy, Carter Jenkins, Tonya Pinkins, Cedric Joe, Ray Fisher, and Julia McDermott.

The series first premiered on January 6, 2022, with six episodes. The series follows when Mamie Till-Mobley’s son Emmett Till is mysteriously killed during the 1955 Jim Crow era in Mississippi. She fights to get justice for her son and ensures that he is not forgotten, leading to the civil rights movement.

The makers have not renewed Women of the Movement for a second season yet, there is no release date for any new upcoming season of the series.

Jay-Z, Will Smith, and Aaron Kaplan attempted to make the miniseries inspired by Emmett Till’s life. They aimed to make it for HBO in 2016. They collaborated with a few more producers, but HBO left it at one point. It was planned to put more emphasis on women during the civil rights movement. The show entered development two years ago.
