Kazutaka Kodaka is the creator of the 2020 Japanese cyberpunk anime television series Akudama Drive, which is made by Pierrot and Too Kyo Games.

The COVID-19 epidemic forced the anime to be postponed from July 2020 to October 2020.

From October 8 to December 24, 2020, the series was shown. Outside of Asia, Funimation obtained a license for the show and made it available for streaming on its website in North America, the British Isles, Mexico, Brazil, and Europe via Wakanim, and Australia and New Zealand via AnimeLab.

Funimation said that the show would have an English dub on December 2, 2020. The series was transferred to Crunchyroll when Sony bought Crunchyroll.

The show was received amazingly. Reviews were fantastic- Otaku USA gave the animation high marks in their review, saying, it “is always spectacular and action choreography/camerawork always hyper-kinetic.”

Akudama Drive was cited as one of their favorite shows from 2020 by several Anime News Network writers, and users of the same website ranked it as the 9th greatest anime of the year. It was named one of the top anime of 2020 by Funimation and UK Anime News, with the latter praising its use of characters and setting to the point that it was named one of the finest sci-fi anime with Id – Invaded.

Akudama Drive’s first season debuted on October 8, 2020, and ran for 12 episodes before wrapping up on December 24, 2020. Neither Pierrot nor Ku Kyo Games have made any statements regarding the series’ future.

Given how the anime developed, it’s probable that there was just one season. Season 2 of “Akudama Drive” would most likely premiere in 2022 or later if it were not renewed.

But if you saw the first season of Akudama Drive, you already know the story- in a dystopian future when Kansai is a vassal state of Kant, a group of highly competent criminals known as Akudama receive a request from an unnamed customer to save Cutthroat from execution by releasing him first. In response to the challenge, four Akudama enter the Kansai Police Headquarters in hopes of winning a large sum of money. Once inside, they learn that the assignment was part of a broader plan by their client to force them to collaborate on a more difficult task: to hack into the Shinkansen and take valuable goods from a vault at the head of the train.

A regular girl who was jailed on a minor charge but compelled to maintain the look of a swindler and a low-level hoodlum who was unintentionally let out of jail after the original heist are roped into the task. The group must cooperate to complete the task and collect their sizable reward while avoiding the executioners from the Kansai Police who are hot on their trail.

The majority of Akudama Drive’s primary characters have passed away. Consequently, a fresh cast of characters might be added in Akudama Drive season 2. Kanto’s technologies may be researched in further detail. The brother and sister may still be the main subjects of the series.

Here’s a little memory jog before you watch Akudama Drive Season 1

People in Kansai now live in a worsening society where the poor are growing poorer and the police are getting weaker due to a lack of jurisdiction.

A metropolis with cybernetic displays and neon lights might seem like a utopia, but the city’s shadowy lanes are populated by “Akudama,” or fugitives.

The Kansai Police Department concentrates on punishing a notorious Akudama “jackfruit” who was found guilty of killing hundreds of people after learning about these fugitives.

Later, once someone has placed a sufficient amount of money on the line, an anonymous message is delivered to that person, allowing them to release the jackfruit. Following this suggestion, four Akudam residents visit the Kansai Police Department in the hopes of receiving a sizable reward, only to discover that significant work was accomplished.

To bring together these fugitives for the challenging task of infiltrating Shinkansen, a bounty was offered. He was sent to the Shinkansen to take valuables from a vault outside the train.

Amidst all of this, a girl who is “ordinary” is compelled to “fake” her personality after being arrested for petty offenses. The squad will now need to collaborate to obtain large pay while battling the Kansai Police Executioners Department.
