Marseille is based against a backdrop of the rich and elite French culture and lifestyle focusing on the underlying corruption, battle for power, and redemption taking place. And then there’s Depardieu, a singular character in French culture: one of their most recognizable artistic exports, but still very familiar to all levels of controversies as he plays a character larger than life, the mayor, Robert Taro.

As the show opens, Taro is working on his last project as he will be retiring soon by handing over the reins to his protégé, Lucas Barres, which is based on a regeneration of Marseille’s marina that will see a huge casino placed at its center. But things take a turn when Barres decides to betray him by casting a vote against the project, pushing Taro to run for the office one more time.

As of April 2022, Marseille has 2 seasons available on Netflix but the French political drama will not be returning to Netflix for a third season as the show has officially been canceled. Across the globe, the show didn’t do too bad with the critics and reception but surprisingly those in France themselves were unkind and responded negatively to the show. Overall the show couldn’t please and keep its audience hooked owing to its halt.

Marseille Season 3 Reception

The show could not garner a good reaction from its home French audience and most French articles bashed it as a massacre in the name of entertainment. However, outside France, the show received comparatively better critics but still, the show could garner an average rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb and a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Gérard Depardieu plays the role of the mayor, Robert Taro, and the English dubbing has been done by Michael McConnohie. Benoît Magimel plays Lucas Barrès with Kyle McCarley taking the role for the English dubbing. Géraldine Pailhas portrays Rachel Taro and the character has been dubbed in English by Anne Yatco. Nadia Fares acts as Vanessa d’Abrantes and Karen Strassman does the dubbing. Stéphane Caillard plays as Julia Taro and Cristina Valenzuela dubs for it.

Marseille certainly has its loopholes and imperfections in terms of portraying the French style and nuance resulting in a poor response from the audience but still has some charming themes with the adrenaline rush induced coke-snorting scenes and the whole power struggle saga. It is loud and flawed but couldn’t hook the audience to the extent it planned to.
