Die Hard 6 – Renewed or Cancelled?

Ever wonder about Die Hard 6?

“Die Hard” is among the most recognizable action film franchises in American cinematic history. It all begins with the 1988 original “Die Hard,” portraying Bruce Willis as John McClane, a police investigator who, on his way to his alienated wife’s office Christmas party, has to fight off a bunch of terrorists commanded by Hans Gruber who is attempting to raid a vault (Alan Rickman). Since the movie’s release in 1988, there have been four sequels: “Die Hard 2,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” and “A Good Day to Die Hard.”

It’s reasonable to assume that many Die Hard fans wish the fifth installment had never been created, so the prospect of a Die Hard 6 should frighten them. However, there will always be supporters who yearn for a return to form, with Willis as his best character at the helm. Is there going to be a Die Hard 6? Depending on who you ask, it’s either good or bad news for fans of the finest and worst Die Hard movies.

Officially, it is not. You could say that Die Hard… died hard.

The current Coronavirus epidemic is unlikely to speed things up any time soon.

Following the theatrical release of A Good Day To Die Hard in 2013, Fox Studios began preparing the sixth installment, likely in reaction to the film’s poor critical response.

However, a Die Hard 6 has been in the works since 2017, with the picture focused on both the young and present-day John, as well as reintroducing his ex-wife Holly.

Fans sat up in attention in mid-October 2020, when a small video appeared to hint at Bruce Willis’ forthcoming comeback to the Die Hard franchise. Unfortunately, it was the lead-in to a Die Hard-themed battery commercial. There have been other reports since then, but director Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently announced that a proposed sixth sequel, simply titled McClane, has been scrapped as a result of Fox and Disney‘s merger. In an interview with Polygon, di Bonaventura confirmed that the project was dormant, stating that it’s “not happening.”

In his words, “Yeah, no, It’s not happening. But what was really interesting was we actually came up with an idea to do it. It was a project that wasn’t Die Hard that then, eventually, shifted over to Die Hard.”

While canceled, there is always hope- especially if you’re looking for something different.

Di Bonaventura did proceed to explain that he does not know what the prospects are for a hypothetical future sequel or prequel.

If Disney decides to bring the franchise back, the producer has disclosed his ideas for the sixth chapter, saying “it allowed you the ability to meet the young John McClane and use Bruce […] you sort of got to see both versions of him”. Interestingly enough, the producer also spoke candidly about the nature of the film, stating “it was a project that wasn’t Die Hard that then, eventually, shifted over to Die Hard.”

When Die Hard 6, or McClane, was last mentioned officially before it was scrapped, Bruce Willis as present John McClane was the only definite cast member expected to return. With the inclusion of ex-wife Holly, one would expect Bonnie Bedelia would return to retake her part, but this is questionable. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has also indicated a desire to reprise her role as John and Holly’s daughter Lucy.

However, now that preparations for Die Hard 6 have fallen through, fans of Willis, Winstead, and other prospective cast members may turn to their other scheduled projects instead.
